One of our main objectives in fifth grade is to prepare students for the middle school atmosphere through emphasis on non-fiction reading strategies and study skills. These are taught throughout all curriculum areas this year, especially in Science and Social Studies.
RELIGION-In fifth grade, we focus mainly on the seven sacraments. We discuss, in detail, each sacrament and what it means to us as Catholics. We also stress individual prayer, the parts of the mass, and what it means to be a good person.
READING-We spend a lot of time in class reading (both in our textbook and doing novel studies)- independently and with others. We learn strategies to help us comprehend what we read: making connections, predicting, questioning, visualizing, synthesizing, determining importance, and inferring. We also learn about the parts of a fictional story. We apply these skills to the reading that we do in other subjects as well.
SCIENCE-Fifth grade science is full of fun! We begin the year talking about the difference between living and non-living things. We then go into the parts of a plant and photosynthesis. Fifth grade science also discusses some of our living body systems (digestive, respiratory, and excretory) to show the students how things work inside them. Fifth grade science also has the solar system in store! We explore the different planets and compare/contrast them in groups. Our final unit is about ecosystems of the world and exploring the different climates that living things have the opportunity to live in.
